Valerie Capers Hears All
Sun Bronx apartment of the pianist Valerie Capers as she played the Cy Coleman classic "The Best Is Yet to Come," caressing each word in her warm, husky voice. With only a week to go, she was rehearsing every day for her September 3 debut at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, the opening night of the monthlong "Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival." Cindy Blackman, Renee Rosnes, Carol Sloane and other top artists will also perform in the series. "I'm not quite satisfied," Ms. Capers said to the bassist John Robinson, a member of her quintet. "Try it with me?" Setting up next to the piano, he said, "Valerie, you're never satisfied!" Laughing, she replied, "You're right about that!" They swung into the tune. If Ms. Capers, 65, didn't wear dark glasses, it would take some time to realize that she is blind, having lost her sight at six as a result of a childhood illness.
Katrina anniversary brings out anger, mourning
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- On the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, anger over the stalled rebuilding was palpable throughout a city where the mourning for the dead and feeling of loss for flooded homes, schools, snowball stands, old-time hairstylists and hardware stores doesn't seem to subside. Hurricane Katrina made landfall south of New Orleans at 6:10 a.m. Aug. 29, 2005, as a strong Category 3 hurricane that flooded 80 percent of the city and killed more than 1,600 people in Louisiana and Mississippi. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. .
Who's on top in the battle of the sexes?
Women might feel hard done by, but men have plenty to grumble about, too. At high school Allan Henry finally found something he was good at. But when he started strutting the stage and spouting Shakespeare at macho Flaxmere College in Hawke's Bay, the burly first-fifteeners lost no time in labelling the self-described weedy, straggly-haired Maori boy a sissy. "If you were a guy and you were into drama, you were gay. If you were a girl and you were into it, you were an actress." He survived the taunting relatively unscathed and undaunted and now 25 and a graduate of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School has carved a niche for himself as a stuntman and stage fight choreographer. Blonde, blue-eyed girlfriend Alix Bushnell, 24, is still studying at Toi Whakaari, but has appeared in several productions with Henry and will scrap with him in coming football riot production FootBallistic, which plays at Bats Theatre at the September Dance Your Socks Off Festival.
10 over-the-top long weekends
How about spending a Labor Day weekend out of the country? It's easier than you might expect. A few years ago, Palm Springs, California-based travel writer and hospitality industry consultant Pam Price couldn't resist the opportunity to go to Australia—even though what for many people would be the trip of a lifetime for her lasted one weekend. “My 36-hour stay in Australia was sandwiched between two 17-hour flights between LAX and Sydney," Price recounts, “but I was evaluating the in-flight cuisine in a Qantas' first-class cabin that was created by Rockpool, a trendy Sydney restaurant. I was on a mission." .
