NKSD, Hispanic community ‘hablan’ over dinner

POULSBO — North Kitsap School District board members, staff and teachers might not have been having a “conversacion en Español" last Thursday, but as far as the food was concerned, the area's Hispanic community was the talk of the town.

Local Hispanic Americans celebrated the upcoming school year with NKSD personnel by showcasing their favorite ethnic dishes during a potluck at the district offices. The fine cuisine and friendly atmosphere brought about 60 people to the event.

NKSD assistant director of Learning Support Services Dixie Husser was thrilled to see the community come together for the occasion.

“This is a celebration of a new school year and a community get-together," she said. “Members of the Hispanic community provided food for this potluck. School board members and teachers were in attendance.

Gullah culture is alive and well in South Carolina

For decades in Charleston, S.C., there was little mention of the rich culture of the descendants of black slaves, many of whom lived as farmers and fisher folk on the nearby sea islands.

Euphemisms used by whites helped obscure their history. The Civil War was sometimes referred to as "the recent unpleasantness." Slaves became servants; slave quarters became carriage houses.

Despite rewriting reality and the lack of recognition from outsiders, the culture of West African slaves was nourished by their descendants. The isolation of the sea islands where they lived helped keep their language, arts and traditions largely intact.

But now this culture known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Florida and Georgia is being noticed and sought out by others.

Fallen Tree Displaces Three

At least three Penfield residents are temporarily homeless after a tree fell on their apartment building.

It happened around 11 Saturday night at the Mountain Lane Apartment Complex.

Authorities say a large tree from the hill above the apartments fell onto the roof, punching a hole in the ceiling of at least one unit.

No one was injured, but the building inspector condemned several apartments pending the roof's repair.

Firefighters believe tree rot may be to blame.
