Bigger, better Celebrate Monroeville event organizers' aim

Organizers of Celebrate Monroeville are working to make this year's event bigger than last year's.

The event, now in its third year, highlights the best that Monroeville has to offer in terms of services, restaurants and its people, and this year includes an essay contest on why Monroeville is a great place to live.

The event began as a cooperative effort between Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce and Monroeville Foundation.

Wake up! The bees are on their knees

How strange is the hierarchy of our affections for other animals. The extinction of the Yangtze River dolphin is mourned extravagantly because in its round, intelligent eyes we saw ourselves, before we killed it off. Similarly, the bonobo ape of Central Africa has become the endangered animal du jour in America, on account of its supposedly human characteristics, or those we aspire to: peacefulness, intelligence and an abundant interest in sex.

The bonobo is the subject this week of an 11,000-word profile in The New Yorker, in which it is described as a loveable cross between "a dolphin, the Dalai Lama and Warren Beatty". (I can confirm the highly sexed part because I once interviewed a female bonobo that had learnt to "talk" using a computer at the primate research centre in Georgia.

SAT scores dip all along the line

Local scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test fell slightly this year, following a state and national pattern. But McMinnville High School Principal Kris Olsen said the college entrance exams also give evidence of a positive trend: more students planning to continue their education.

"It's positive that more kids are taking advantage of our college preparatory program and learning what's expected in order to be ready for college," he said. Encouraging students to go on to post-high school education, whether it's college, technical school or another program, has been a major focus for several years, he noted.

The school offers several career pathways, designed to prepare students in areas such as culinary skills or health sciences. It is developing small learning communities, and the first self-contained one, the McMinnville Arts and Communications Academy, will open its doors next week.
