| ELL students finish program
DALLASTOWN SCHOOLS — The Dallastown Area School District recently finished its summer program for English Language Learner students and their parents. Instructional Program Specialist Alma Row said 13 students, from first grade through high school, and two parents participated in the week-long program. The program helps the students and their parents to connect with the community and increase communication skills in English, Row said. The group took a virtual road trip through the United States to have a greater understanding of the country, she said. The trip started in York County and went to Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Francisco, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Google Earth, literature, games and cooking were incorporated in the activities. "It was tons of fun," Row said.

Schools told to fight fat, dump junk food
THE NATIONAL Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked all state governments to tell the schools to ban junk food and beverages, encourage students to eat a nutritious diet and promote physical activity. On the eve of India's 60th Independence Day, the commission issued guidelines on food and nutrition in schools given the rising incidence of child obesity, mainly in urban India. The state governments have been asked to prepare nutrition standards for schools that reflect cultural diversity of students, their food preferences and special dietary needs. The district administrations should set nutritional and portion size limits on all competitive food and beverages, the guidelines said. Commission member Sandhya Bajaj said schools must regularly monitor the growth of students and take remedial steps where a deficiency is identified.
Getting a taste of diplomacy in the kitchen
Francois Gauthier, the French consul general in Boston, knows well how food can foster relations. That's in part why he nominated Jacqueline Cattani, the chef who runs the kitchen at his home in Cambridge, for the Merite Agricole, France's oldest civil award. At a reception for Cattani celebrating the award this spring, Gauthier noted, "Over the last year, we have had the pleasure of hosting, in this house, more than 1,000 guests. And I would not be surprised to learn that even if they enjoyed the pleasure of a good conversation, the beauty of being in good company, the charm and the mystery of the French-American friendship, their most memorable experience was the two or three hours spent in the dining room, and this experience has a name: Jacqueline." You probably don't know who Cattani is, unless you happen to have met her at the home of Gauthier, or seen her with the previous consul and his wife, or their predecessors.
Beverley tops value poll
Householders searching for the best possible lifestyle at the best possible price should move to Beverley. The schools, restaurants and property prices put the Yorkshire town top of the Royal Bank of Scotland's "affordable affluence" survey. Maidstone in Kent came second while Chester was third. The survey considered positive "lifestyle indicators" in each town and the prices charged for them. These included upmarket restaurants, bars, museums, galleries, gyms, top-performing state schools and motor dealerships. .
