Calling all Heath-area models -- here's your chance

For all of you high school students, elementary school students, moms and career women who would like to be a model for a day, stop by Fashion Bug on Hebron Road to pick up an entry form. The store will have a fashion show at 2 p.m. Sept. 15. It hopes to have 50 models.

You will have a chance to relax and chat with other models while wearing clothes from Fashion Bug and have a good time. Women and girls of all ages -- and not just from Heath but from other areas, too -- are invited to join in the fun. The store will accept last-minute participants.

Too often, age is sole factor in when to start school

Dear Dr. Dobson: If age is such a poor factor to use in determining the start of the first grade, why is it applied so universally in our country?

Dear Reader: Because it is so convenient. Parents can plan for the definite beginning of school when their child turns 6. School officials can survey their districts and know how many first-graders they will have the following year. If an 8-year-old moves into the district in October, the administrator knows the child belongs in second grade, and so on. The use of chronological age as a criterion for school entrance is great for everybody -- except the late bloomer who is developmentally unprepared for formal education.

Dear Dr. Dobson: I'm convinced that I should stay home with my preschoolers if finances and temperaments permit.

Big Ed's BBQ to burn up Fallon

Barbecued turkey legs, pulled pork, beef-link sausage ... hungry yet?

Soon these and many more barbecued specialties will be available for Fallonites at Big Ed's All American Brickhouse BBQ on the corner of West Williams Avenue and North Allen Street.

The talent behind the new barbecue house is chef Clay Slieff, a graduate and instructor at the Culinary Institute of America in California's Napa Valley. Slieff is also certified in smoking meats and making homemade sausage.

Besides his culinary education, Slieff has an impressive résumé that includes his current position as executive room chef for the Atlantis Steakhouse, the former executive chef at Circus Circus and the Peppermill, and he's had a big hand in opening Adele's in both Reno and Carson City.
