16-year-old heads to college

Sam Ferguson is filled with anticipation as well as a few mixed emotions. While his former classmates are entering their junior year at Blythewood High School, he will begin his freshman year at Simons Rock College of Bard in Great Barrington, Mass.

August 21 is the kickoff for incoming freshmen at Simons Rock, a college of the liberal arts and sciences designed for students who have completed tenth or 11th grade. As the first day of college approaches, Ferguson is diligently wrapping up his Eagle Scout project and he has started packing his bags. Although hes excited about settling into the freshman dormitory, he admits he will miss his parents, Leland and Aline, his younger sister, Amy, and her horse Alphie, and of course PupPup the family dog.

Sixteenyearold Ferguson is at ease knowing that there will be frequent breaks throughout the school year when he can come home to Blythewood and visit with his family.

Register and School Bells Ring

When the holiday weekend is over, school starts. Cash registers are ringing along with school bells. The National Retail Federation says it expects families to spend 6.9 percent more this year than last year on back to school merchandise.

The NRF predicts total spending will reach 18.4 million dollars.

"Binders, spirals pens, pencils, paper, folder, shirts and pants and hoodies and stuff," Kendra Everts named the items on her back-to-school list.

"Mostly my cell phone, some clothes come in handy, but I like my cell phone," high school junior Andrea Marcera said.

The list for every student is different, heading back to class means making one last stop at the mall.

For parents it's all about the necessities.

"I try to get what she needs to start off school," Andrea's mother Lori Marcera said.
